10 Ways You Can Help Your Kids Improve Their Self-Management Skills

10 Ways You Can Help Your Kids Improve Their Self-Management Skills

Self-management is the act of controlling oneself. With self-management, kids should learn to take responsibility for themselves and regulate their activities, thoughts, emotions, and behavior to achieve desired results. Kids who learn these skills may be better able to avoid problems in school or with other people while developing an internal locus of control – the sense that you are the cause of your own life. This article is about 10 Ways You Can Help Your Kids Improve Their Self-Management Skills

Given that your child is in his early years, it means they are not yet capable of handling their emotions and selves well. They can be a little bit impulsive because their brains are still developing and growing at a rapid rate. As a parent, you play an important role in developing your child’s self-management skills early on. It is your duty and obligation to guide them on how to do things right and wrong.

All kids need a little help in mastering self-management skills. Whatever stage of development they’re in, they’ll benefit from your guidance and direction. Yet, developing children’s self-management skills is not an easy task to accomplish. You may need dedication and perseverance in order to help them. You may also need to look for effective ways to properly develop your child’s self-management skills. Luckily this article provides a number of tips and suggestions to help you.

Why Is It Important For Kids To Have Good Self-Management Skills?

There are many reasons why you should help your child develop self-management and life management skills. One, it will have a positive effect on your kid’s development. You may have noticed that some children are usually impulsive and impetuous. They tend to make bad choices and actions due to their lack of self-control and good self-regulation skills. On the other hand, kids with high self-control tend to make more sensible and favorable decisions. It can help them avoid problems in their future life.

Secondly, it will also assist in making your child happier. It is well known that kids who can control themselves are more likely to live happier lives than those who lack these skills. With high levels of self-management, your child can gain the ability to control his emotions and actions. He can have a better attitude towards life situations.

Thirdly, it will also help your child avoid future school behavior problems and low self-esteem. Young children with low levels of self-control are more likely to face school behavior problems in the future because they can’t handle their emotions well. 10 Ways You Can Help Your Kids Improve Their Self-Management Skills

10 Ways You Can Help Your Kids Improve Their Self-Management Skills

There are several ways you can help your kids develop their self-management skills when you expose them to different situations that demand self-regulation. Here are ten ways you can do it:

1. Create A Daily Schedule

By creating a daily schedule for your child, you can guide him on the way he needs to go. It will make your child feel very calm and secure when the day comes. The most important thing about creating a daily schedule is that it helps your kid discipline and control his impulses. He’ll be able to slow down and focus his attention before he makes bad decisions. It is crucial for promoting good self-management skills because it will help him think before he acts.

2. Stick to Deadlines

There are several things that kids with low self-control do to avoid tasks they cannot handle. They will often refuse and delay without thinking. It is a bad habit your child may need to correct because it will impede his progress and make him frustrated. I suggest you create and stick to deadlines as part of your daily schedule for your child. The more time he spends on tasks, the more chances he’ll have to learn how to control himself in the first place.

3. Teach Your Kids To Accept Failure

Tell your kid that failure is part of the game of life. Emphasize the positive and positive outcomes of failure to teach them to accept it as part of life instead of avoiding it and being afraid of it because they are afraid they might fail again.

4. Teach Your Kids To Approach Problems

When you perceive your child as unable to handle a problem on their own, you should help them approach it in a way that will help them learn and assess the situation. For instance, when they encounter a problem that they can’t handle themselves, let them talk to you about the problem. It will give them an idea of how to handle it and what steps they should take next. Suggestible thinking is included with taking responsibility for one’s actions and decisions.

5. Teach Your Kids To Set Up Goals and Priorities

You should show them how to set up goals and priorities by giving them different goal-setting tools that you have learned about. You can also set up various goals for them like getting good grades in school, traveling, gaining experience in life so that they’ll learn the importance of setting and achieving goals for their future in life.

6. Teach Your Kids To Take On More Responsibilities

It is valuable to teach your kid to take on more responsibilities in his life. You should have a discussion with your child and make them aware of the areas where they can do more work and where they can spend more time. Teach them how to appreciate their duties, responsibilities, and opportunities that will come their way when they grow older.

7. Teach Your Kids To Know Their Limits

Once you have taught your kid to know their limits, teach them how to respect them. It is very beneficial for their self-management because they will learn to respect their own body and mind.

8. Teach Your Kids To Take On New Challenges

Kids with low self-control need to learn how to take on new challenges in life. You can help this by exposing them to various experiments and challenging them to do new things or try out new things that they’ve never done before. It will help them believe that even though there are obstacles in achieving something, they cannot stop at anything because there are more things out there that they can achieve if they want to do so.

9. Teach Your Kids To Focus

Teach your kid to focus on certain important things. For instance, you should make him focus on the things he loves so that he won’t forget about them when he’s stressed out or in a tough situation.

10. Teach Your Kids To Have Good Self-Confidence

When you teach your kid to have good self-confidence, it will help him develop his optimistic attitude and belief in himself, which will encourage him to keep trying whatever it is he wants to achieve and accomplish in his life.

In conclusion, I hope the information I shared today about how to improve your child’s self-management skills can help you give your kid the opportunity to become an independent person capable of making responsible decisions on their own. It is challenging for parents because it takes a lot of effort, time, and dedication when you try hard to do something like this. This article offers ten tips for parents to keep their children engaged in the world around them instead of on screens. These ten tips will help you find new and fun activities to do with your children.

Negative Effects of Too Much Screen Time

There are many negative effects of too much screen time. These can be both physical and social. Children who spend most of their time on screens may experience a loss of energy, they can become sedentary, and they can lose interest in other activities such as sports or reading. If a young child spends too much time on their gadgets, they might not sleep well or eat properly. They could also develop health problems like obesity or diabetes later in life because of the lack of exercise in their lives.

Young children are also at risk of being socially isolated if they spend too much time staring at screens. It is because social media is often used as a substitute for real-life interactions with friends and family members. If children spend too much time pursuing the games or other media they enjoy on their screens, they might become unwilling to interact with others in the real world.

10 Tips to Keep Your Children Engaged And Away From Screens

If your young child spends a lot of time staring at screens, it can be hard to find things for them to do in the real world. Fortunately, with these ten tips, you can find some activities for your children that will keep them engaged and away from screens.

1. Get Routine

You can make sure your children get more physical activity by making sure they get into a routine when playing video games and watching television programs. You should have certain times when your children play video games and watch television each day. It means you should set limits on their time doing these things. You should also get a computer desk that you can use to store the educational games and open-ended toys they use so that they have to get up to play them.

2. Give Them Opportunities to Learn About the World Around Them

You should allow your child to learn through all the senses while having fun. For example, you might try having your child learn about the world around them by exploring different neighborhoods. You could also have your child learn about a different country and culture using a map or a travel book.

3. Encourage Them to Get Outside

You need to take your children outside every day and encourage them to spend time with their friends at school or in the community. You could also take them to an outdoor game if you have a football, baseball, basketball, or soccer field close by. It will encourage your children to spend time outdoors and reduce the amount of time they spend on devices.

4. Encourage Them to Write

Children who are writing are less likely to use digital devices too much. You could encourage your child to become a great writer by encouraging them to write stories while playing with their toys or playing with their siblings. You could also find creative ways to practice writing every day by encouraging them to write letters that describe what happened in the day. 5. Help Them Make Something

If you want your child to spend less time staring at a screen, try helping them make something instead of playing a game on the computer or phone. You could make them a craft by mixing different pieces of fabric or by creating drawings on paper. You could also give them the task of making a puppet that they can take to school for show and tell instead of bringing a toy.

6. Take Them to Visit Another Place

Your child can get plenty of screen time just by taking them to visit another place such as the park or a museum. Consider taking your child to an educational exhibit that they might enjoy along with other family members like Mother’s Day and Father’s Day. If you have older kids, you can try attending a recital or show at the theater so they can be outside while they are doing what they love.

7. Create New Adventures

One of the ideal ways to get a child engaged in new activities is to create their adventures. For instance, you can ask your little one to build a fort in the backyard, play dress-up with them, or have them come up with a story using their imaginations. If you aren’t creative yourself, ask around to see what types of interesting things children are doing in your neighborhood.

8. Make Them Help Around the House

If your children are glued to screens all day, then you might want to make them help with chores around the house. You can also make them help the school run by picking up their sibling or walking to the bus stop. These activities could encourage your children to get away from screens more often and allow them to be more productive members of the household.

9. Play Board Games

Board games are great alternatives to video games and computers. They require concentration and problem-solving skills, which are essential for learning. Play games with your children. Even if you aren’t interested in playing, you can still show your support by offering to buy them a game now and then.

10. Teach Them to Cook

If you want to encourage your children to spend less time looking at screens, you should teach them how to cook their meals. You could ask your little one if they would like to bake something or put together a recipe. You can ask your child to help you prepare the tools and ingredients for cooking. This activity is a great way for your children to learn new skills while having fun at the same time.

Suppose you have agreed to do any of these activities with your children and find it is not working for them. In that case, you should consider talking with your child’s teacher or other adults in their life about how they can improve their engagement with technology. If this doesn’t work, you can temporarily remove all digital devices from the house so they can get more comfortable being unplugged. You should remove devices that are used to communicate with friends while they are away from home and devices outside of the home such as game consoles and tablets.

Story – Dining In the Dark – 3 Lessons

Story – Dining In the Dark – 3 Lessons

I was invited to one Friday evening event by one of MNC Vendor organization who had organized the event to raise funds for the visually handicapped people in a center for blind people.

As usual, since it was a Friday evening, I first thought to skip the event considering it could be a bit boring and rather spend the evening relaxing by some other means. Story – Dining In the Dark

But being alone and sometimes finding it difficult to kill time, I thought to accept the invitation and registered on line for booking.

Moreover it was free 🙂 which was another motivation to go to the event.

I was looking at the event to pass some time, meet few people and nothing else. Story – Dining In the Dark

When I went there, there were approximately 40 people from various industries invited for that event. I found some Indians and naturally talked to them about how life is in Singapore etc. Initially we were shown a video about the visually handicapped center. What are their activities, how are they helping blind people in Singapore to lead a more fulfilling life, etc . It was a short 15 minute video and quite inspiring that how people from different walks of life spend time in helping these blind people without expecting anything in return.

They shared the satisfaction and fulfillment they get by helping them.

After the video, we all were gathered in a hall and were briefed about next event. The theme of the next event was “Dining in the Dark”.

And this is the event which turned out to be inspiring and worth sharing.

What is meant was that we all 40+ people were going to have Dinner in a pitch Dark room !!!! The next 2 hours were completely planned, organized , directed and executed by three blind youths.

One was a girl ( Leader ) and other two boys were assistant to her forming a team of three blind volunteers.

The blind leader first gave us tips for dining (These were ACTUAL STANDARDS THE BLIND PEOPLE FOLLOW IN ORDER TO MAKE THEIR LIFE EASIER)

  • 1. When you sit at your table the things will be placed as follows :

at 3 o clock of your dish : You will find a spoon.
at 9 o clock : Fork;
12 o clock : spoon.
2 o clock : Empty Glass Dish at the center with Paper napkin tucked at 6 o clock.

  • 2. There will be two large Jugs circulated to you. The Jug with plain walls will have water and the Jug with curved wall will have orange juice.

  • 3. When you get your Jug based on your choice you have to pour it in your glass. You have to dip your forefinger in the glass so that when you fill it and the liquid touches your finger, you have to stop pouring.

She asked whether everyone has understood.

All said yes but everyone was confused and trying to remember what she said and confirming with each other. Next 1 1/2 hours we spent were full of fun and learning. In completely pitch dark room where we could not see ANYTHING we were enjoying various delicious food without seeing it.

We all 40 people were taken in groups in the dark hall.

Each one was directed by blind person till he/she sits on a chair (We were finding it awkward because actually we are supposed to guide blind people to their destination and help them).

We were Served full five course dinner by this team of three blind people-Welcome drinks, appetizers, starters , main course and desserts.

The amazing thing was that the team of three blind people were serving exactly vegetarian dishes to vegetarian people who were sitting randomly in the room!

While registering on line we were asked question to choose from “Vegetarian” or “Non vegetarian”. I obviously chose Vegetarian, being one. We were so nicely hosted that we did not have to wait in between serves . As we were ending finishing one dish, we were served with next without any delays.

After approximately 1 and half hours of Dining in the dark , the leader asked whether everyone has finished eating. After confirmation she switched on the lights of the dining room.

We left the Dining room with tears in our eyes.

Key Inspirations from Story – Dining In the Dark

  • We realized how lucky we are and how we have been gifted with beautiful eyes to see the beautiful world. We realized how difficult lives of blind people are ( and other handicapped) without being able to see.
  • We realized how uncomfortable we were for just two hours without being able to see anything and how they must be living their lives.
  • We realized how unfortunate we are , that we do not value such simple things in life we have and cry (sometime louder, sometime within ourselves) and run after what we don’t have… for whole of our lives without having time to adore for the things we have.

This story inspires us to start thinking about the less fortunate people and play our moral role. Orphans, blinds and other handicap people need our time, attention, love and support. Being healthy is a great gift of God and it will be unfair if we do not visit orphanages etc to the people who do not enjoy these great blessings of God.
