The 1st type of people are the ones in the Pursuit of Happiness. These people always want to be happy. They want to have fun all the times, going to parties, hang out with friends, watching favorite TV shows and several other things which can bring happiness. However they do not understand that the universe does not work this way. Life is full of so many emotions and feelings which a person has to pass through. 10 Ways You Can Help Your Kids Improve Their Self-Management Skills

Self-management is the act of controlling oneself. With self-management, kids should learn to take responsibility for themselves and regulate their activities, thoughts, emotions, and behavior to achieve desired results. Kids who learn these skills may be better able to avoid problems in school or with other people while developing an internal locus of control – the sense that you are the cause of your own life. This article is about 10 Ways You Can Help Your Kids Improve Their Self-Management Skills

Given that your child is in his early years, it means they are not yet capable of handling their emotions and selves well. They can be a little bit impulsive because their brains are still developing and growing at a rapid rate. As a parent, you play an important role in developing your child’s self-management skills early on. It is your duty and obligation to guide them on how to do things right and wrong.

All kids need a little help in mastering self-management skills. Whatever stage of development they’re in, they’ll benefit from your guidance and direction. Yet, developing children’s self-management skills is not an easy task to accomplish. You may need dedication and perseverance in order to help them. You may also need to look for effective ways to properly develop your child’s self-management skills. Luckily this article provides a number of tips and suggestions to help you.

Why Is It Important For Kids To Have Good Self-Management Skills?

There are many reasons why you should help your child develop self-management and life management skills. One, it will have a positive effect on your kid’s development. You may have noticed that some children are usually impulsive and impetuous. They tend to make bad choices and actions due to their lack of self-control and good self-regulation skills. On the other hand, kids with high self-control tend to make more sensible and favorable decisions. It can help them avoid problems in their future life.

Secondly, it will also assist in making your child happier. It is well known that kids who can control themselves are more likely to live happier lives than those who lack these skills. With high levels of self-management, your child can gain the ability to control his emotions and actions. He can have a better attitude towards life situations.

Thirdly, it will also help your child avoid future school behavior problems and low self-esteem. Young children with low levels of self-control are more likely to face school behavior problems in the future because they can’t handle their emotions well. In addition, they may also develop poor self-esteem due to the frequent occurrences of problems and failures in their life.

10 Ways You Can Help Your Kids Improve Their Self-Management Skills

10 Ways You Can Help Your Kids Improve Their Self-Management Skills

There are several ways you can help your kids develop their self-management skills when you expose them to different situations that demand self-regulation. Here are ten ways you can do it:

1. Create A Daily Schedule

By creating a daily schedule for your child, you can guide him on the way he needs to go. It will make your child feel very calm and secure when the day comes. The most important thing about creating a daily schedule is that it helps your kid discipline and control his impulses. He’ll be able to slow down and focus his attention before he makes bad decisions. It is crucial for promoting good self-management skills because it will help him think before he acts.

2. Stick to Deadlines

There are several things that kids with low self-control do to avoid tasks they cannot handle. They will often refuse and delay without thinking. It is a bad habit your child may need to correct because it will impede his progress and make him frustrated. I suggest you create and stick to deadlines as part of your daily schedule for your child. The more time he spends on tasks, the more chances he’ll have to learn how to control himself in the first place.

3. Teach Your Kids To Accept Failure

Tell your kid that failure is part of the game of life. Emphasize the positive and positive outcomes of failure to teach them to accept it as part of life instead of avoiding it and being afraid of it because they are afraid they might fail again.

4. Teach Your Kids To Approach Problems

When you perceive your child as unable to handle a problem on their own, you should help them approach it in a way that will help them learn and assess the situation. For instance, when they encounter a problem that they can’t handle themselves, let them talk to you about the problem. It will give them an idea of how to handle it and what steps they should take next. Suggestible thinking is included with taking responsibility for one’s actions and decisions.

5. Teach Your Kids To Set Up Goals and Priorities

You should show them how to set up goals and priorities by giving them different goal-setting tools that you have learned about. You can also set up various goals for them like getting good grades in school, traveling, gaining experience in life so that they’ll learn the importance of setting and achieving goals for their future in life.

6. Teach Your Kids To Take On More Responsibilities

It is valuable to teach your kid to take on more responsibilities in his life. You should have a discussion with your child and make them aware of the areas where they can do more work and where they can spend more time. Teach them how to appreciate their duties, responsibilities, and opportunities that will come their way when they grow older.

7. Teach Your Kids To Know Their Limits

Once you have taught your kid to know their limits, teach them how to respect them. It is very beneficial for their self-management because they will learn to respect their own body and mind.

8. Teach Your Kids To Take On New Challenges

Kids with low self-control need to learn how to take on new challenges in life. You can help this by exposing them to various experiments and challenging them to do new things or try out new things that they’ve never done before. It will help them believe that even though there are obstacles in achieving something, they cannot stop at anything because there are more things out there that they can achieve if they want to do so.

9. Teach Your Kids To Focus

Teach your kid to focus on certain important things. For instance, you should make him focus on the things he loves so that he won’t forget about them when he’s stressed out or in a tough situation.

10. Teach Your Kids To Have Good Self-Confidence

When you teach your kid to have good self-confidence, it will help him develop his optimistic attitude and belief in himself, which will encourage him to keep trying whatever it is he wants to achieve and accomplish in his life.

In conclusion, I hope the information I shared today about how to improve your child’s self-management skills can help you give your kid the opportunity to become an independent person capable of making responsible decisions on their own. It is challenging for parents because it takes a lot of effort, time, and dedication when you try hard to do something like this. 10 Tips to Keep Your Children Engaged And Away From Screens

10 Tips to Keep Your Children Engaged And Away From Screens

If you have kids, you know that keeping them away from screens can be hard. They love their gadgets, and they want to use them all the time. Though there are benefits to having children spend time on screens and using technology, there are also drawbacks. Children who spend most of their time staring at screens may become less engaged with the world around them and develop a passive relationship with social media. If you have kids, you know that keeping them away from screens can be hard. 10 Tips to Keep Your Children Engaged And Away From Screens

As a parent, you must determine the balance between screen time and other important activities in their lives. They need to get enough exercise, they should get fresh air and sunshine, they need to have a good social life, and they need to develop strong relationships with people. However, it can be hard to figure out what your child would enjoy doing without technology. Luckily enough, this article can help you.

This article offers ten tips for parents to keep their children engaged in the world around them instead of on screens. These ten tips will help you find new and fun activities to do with your children.

Negative Effects of Too Much Screen Time

There are many negative effects of too much screen time. These can be both physical and social. Children who spend most of their time on screens may experience a loss of energy, they can become sedentary, and they can lose interest in other activities such as sports or reading. If a young child spends too much time on their gadgets, they might not sleep well or eat properly. They could also develop health problems like obesity or diabetes later in life because of the lack of exercise in their lives.

Young children are also at risk of being socially isolated if they spend too much time staring at screens. It is because social media is often used as a substitute for real-life interactions with friends and family members. If children spend too much time pursuing the games or other media they enjoy on their screens, they might become unwilling to interact with others in the real world.

10 Tips to Keep Your Children Engaged And Away From Screens

If your young child spends a lot of time staring at screens, it can be hard to find things for them to do in the real world. Fortunately, with these ten tips, you can find some activities for your children that will keep them engaged and away from screens.

1. Get Routine

You can make sure your children get more physical activity by making sure they get into a routine when playing video games and watching television programs. You should have certain times when your children play video games and watch television each day. It means you should set limits on their time doing these things. You should also get a computer desk that you can use to store the educational games and open-ended toys they use so that they have to get up to play them.

2. Give Them Opportunities to Learn About the World Around Them

You should allow your child to learn through all the senses while having fun. For example, you might try having your child learn about the world around them by exploring different neighborhoods. You could also have your child learn about a different country and culture using a map or a travel book.

3. Encourage Them to Get Outside

You need to take your children outside every day and encourage them to spend time with their friends at school or in the community. You could also take them to an outdoor game if you have a football, baseball, basketball, or soccer field close by. It will encourage your children to spend time outdoors and reduce the amount of time they spend on devices.

4. Encourage Them to Write

Children who are writing are less likely to use digital devices too much. You could encourage your child to become a great writer by encouraging them to write stories while playing with their toys or playing with their siblings. You could also find creative ways to practice writing every day by encouraging them to write letters that describe what happened in the day. Check out this article 10 awesome tips to improve writing skills for children

5. Help Them Make Something

If you want your child to spend less time staring at a screen, try helping them make something instead of playing a game on the computer or phone. You could make them a craft by mixing different pieces of fabric or by creating drawings on paper. You could also give them the task of making a puppet that they can take to school for show and tell instead of bringing a toy.

6. Take Them to Visit Another Place

Your child can get plenty of screen time just by taking them to visit another place such as the park or a museum. Consider taking your child to an educational exhibit that they might enjoy along with other family members like Mother’s Day and Father’s Day. If you have older kids, you can try attending a recital or show at the theater so they can be outside while they are doing what they love.

7. Create New Adventures

One of the ideal ways to get a child engaged in new activities is to create their adventures. For instance, you can ask your little one to build a fort in the backyard, play dress-up with them, or have them come up with a story using their imaginations. If you aren’t creative yourself, ask around to see what types of interesting things children are doing in your neighborhood.

8. Make Them Help Around the House

If your children are glued to screens all day, then you might want to make them help with chores around the house. You can also make them help the school run by picking up their sibling or walking to the bus stop. These activities could encourage your children to get away from screens more often and allow them to be more productive members of the household.

9. Play Board Games

Board games are great alternatives to video games and computers. They require concentration and problem-solving skills, which are essential for learning. Play games with your children. Even if you aren’t interested in playing, you can still show your support by offering to buy them a game now and then.

10. Teach Them to Cook

If you want to encourage your children to spend less time looking at screens, you should teach them how to cook their meals. You could ask your little one if they would like to bake something or put together a recipe. You can ask your child to help you prepare the tools and ingredients for cooking. This activity is a great way for your children to learn new skills while having fun at the same time.

Suppose you have agreed to do any of these activities with your children and find it is not working for them. In that case, you should consider talking with your child’s teacher or other adults in their life about how they can improve their engagement with technology. If this doesn’t work, you can temporarily remove all digital devices from the house so they can get more comfortable being unplugged. You should remove devices that are used to communicate with friends while they are away from home and devices outside of the home such as game consoles and tablets.

Story – Dining In the Dark – 3 Lessons

I was invited to one Friday evening event by one of MNC Vendor organization who had organized the event to raise funds for the visually handicapped people in a center for blind people.

As usual, since it was a Friday evening, I first thought to skip the event considering it could be a bit boring and rather spend the evening relaxing by some other means. Story – Dining In the Dark

But being alone and sometimes finding it difficult to kill time, I thought to accept the invitation and registered on line for booking.

Moreover it was free 🙂 which was another motivation to go to the event.

I was looking at the event to pass some time, meet few people and nothing else. Story – Dining In the Dark

When I went there, there were approximately 40 people from various industries invited for that event. I found some Indians and naturally talked to them about how life is in Singapore etc. Initially we were shown a video about the visually handicapped center. What are their activities, how are they helping blind people in Singapore to lead a more fulfilling life, etc . It was a short 15 minute video and quite inspiring that how people from different walks of life spend time in helping these blind people without expecting anything in return.

They shared the satisfaction and fulfillment they get by helping them.

After the video, we all were gathered in a hall and were briefed about next event. The theme of the next event was “Dining in the Dark”.

And this is the event which turned out to be inspiring and worth sharing.

What is meant was that we all 40+ people were going to have Dinner in a pitch Dark room !!!! The next 2 hours were completely planned, organized , directed and executed by three blind youths.

One was a girl ( Leader ) and other two boys were assistant to her forming a team of three blind volunteers.

The blind leader first gave us tips for dining (These were ACTUAL STANDARDS THE BLIND PEOPLE FOLLOW IN ORDER TO MAKE THEIR LIFE EASIER)

  • 1. When you sit at your table the things will be placed as follows :

at 3 o clock of your dish : You will find a spoon.
at 9 o clock : Fork;
12 o clock : spoon.
2 o clock : Empty Glass Dish at the center with Paper napkin tucked at 6 o clock.

  • 2. There will be two large Jugs circulated to you. The Jug with plain walls will have water and the Jug with curved wall will have orange juice.

  • 3. When you get your Jug based on your choice you have to pour it in your glass. You have to dip your forefinger in the glass so that when you fill it and the liquid touches your finger, you have to stop pouring.

She asked whether everyone has understood.

All said yes but everyone was confused and trying to remember what she said and confirming with each other. Next 1 1/2 hours we spent were full of fun and learning. In completely pitch dark room where we could not see ANYTHING we were enjoying various delicious food without seeing it.

We all 40 people were taken in groups in the dark hall.

Each one was directed by blind person till he/she sits on a chair (We were finding it awkward because actually we are supposed to guide blind people to their destination and help them).

We were Served full five course dinner by this team of three blind people-Welcome drinks, appetizers, starters , main course and desserts.

The amazing thing was that the team of three blind people were serving exactly vegetarian dishes to vegetarian people who were sitting randomly in the room!

While registering on line we were asked question to choose from “Vegetarian” or “Non vegetarian”. I obviously chose Vegetarian, being one. We were so nicely hosted that we did not have to wait in between serves . As we were ending finishing one dish, we were served with next without any delays.

After approximately 1 and half hours of Dining in the dark , the leader asked whether everyone has finished eating. After confirmation she switched on the lights of the dining room.

We left the Dining room with tears in our eyes.

Key Inspirations from Story – Dining In the Dark

  • We realized how lucky we are and how we have been gifted with beautiful eyes to see the beautiful world. We realized how difficult lives of blind people are ( and other handicapped) without being able to see.
  • We realized how uncomfortable we were for just two hours without being able to see anything and how they must be living their lives.
  • We realized how unfortunate we are , that we do not value such simple things in life we have and cry (sometime louder, sometime within ourselves) and run after what we don’t have… for whole of our lives without having time to adore for the things we have.

This story inspires us to start thinking about the less fortunate people and play our moral role. Orphans, blinds and other handicap people need our time, attention, love and support. Being healthy is a great gift of God and it will be unfair if we do not visit orphanages etc to the people who do not enjoy these great blessings of God.

5 Reasons Why an International School is Best For Your Kid

All parents want the best for their kid. All kids have the right to a bright and promising future. This is something that all parents should always secure. Ensuring this can be a little tricky for parents that move from one country to another. It’s a good thing that international schools exist. This article is about 5 Reasons Why an International School is Best For Your Kid

If you just moved to a new country and you still want your child to be in top form when it comes to his or her education, you should consider looking for international schools in your area. The following are the top reasons why you should consider enrolling your child in an international school:

Reason #1: Your child’s unique talents and skills will be honored. Your child will be seen as a unique student with particular needs.

An international school, like Bangkok Prep International School, has dedicated programs to evaluate the unique skills and talents of your child. Unlike regular schools, your child will not be forced to participate in activities that he or she is not even interested in. International schools apply advanced methods in determining your child’s unique interests and learning styles.

Your child will feel seen and heard when enrolled in international schools because his or her curricula and activities will revolve on matters that he finds truly engaging and fun. Your child will not have a hard time adjusting to everything because international schools have ready learning structures that can accommodate every unique child’s personality and quirks.

With an international school experience, you wouldn’t need to pressure your child to explore. His or her everyday life will be dedicated to the natural exploration of his or her unique gifts and talents. An international school experience will allow you to see your child as he or she naturally blooms into the person that he or she wants to become.

Reason #2: Your child will study a curriculum that is recognized all over the world.

Working abroad will not compromise your child’s schooling if you’d enroll your child in an international school. International schools differ greatly from regular schools in this aspect. A regular school normally follows the national standard or religious standard of its administrators while an international school follows international standards by providing globalized curricula like the International Baccalaureate (IB) programme. The IB programme is taught in over 150 countries. Most British and American schools take after it. This means that your child will get to reap the benefits of a Western-style curriculum even if your child is in Asia. What’s amazing is that all his or her credits will be duly honored should he or she apply to a Western university.

Reason #3: Your child will learn in an environment that easily breaks down the language barrier.

An international school is perfect for your child if you’re worried that he or she may not be able to adjust well due to language differences. International schools use English as their main language. Your child will be learning with students who are also fluent and eloquent in English. He or she will have an easier time mingling with kids his age as he’d get to interact with ones he or she can easily talk to. Your child will also not have a hard time keeping up with lessons as all subjects will be taught in English.

As International Schools have students with different nationalities, your child will also be able to easily learn other languages. Learning a different language is easier if there is prior familiarity and it’s always heard. Parents who want their kids to learn different languages go out of their way to even send their kids abroad for total language immersion. Your child will effortlessly benefit from a similar set-up if you’d enroll him or her in an International School.

Reason #4: Your child will have a global outlook.

It’s essential for today’s children to have a global outlook in life. This can be easily achieved if you’d have them enrolled in an International School. International Schools focus on educating students to become excellent global citizens. They have particular programs that empower students with knowledge and skills for international academic and professional undertakings.

As International Schools have culturally diverse students, your child will also have an easier time relating to people coming from different backgrounds and cultures. Your child will also be exposed to mentors from different parts of the world that represent the best of the best when it comes to the field they’re teaching.

Reason #5: Your child will be a member of a colorful and vibrant international student community.

Moving to a different country and starting anew far from family and old friends is quite a big thing to face for a child. They may not share their struggles upfront but you will surely see it in the way that they behave and interact with you. This struggle can be tended to if you’d enroll your child in an International School. Students in International Schools share the same struggle. Your child will be exposed to children who truly understand how he or she feels.

Your child will be classmates with the sons and daughters of diplomats and international entrepreneurs who may or may not frequently move from one country to another.  Your child will be with kids who share the same lifestyle. That will be truly beneficial because your child will feel less alone. Your child will also get to meet other expat families that will make him or her feel that all is truly well.

How does society affect the learning environment?

How does society affect the learning environment?

Education plays a key role in structuring and shaping up society. It empowers individuals to adapt to social change. And supports them to play their varied roles efficiently.

There is a strong influence of society on the educational structure. And it certainly affects the ones learning environment immensely.

Let’s explore how does society affect the learning environment?

1- Formal and informal education

Learning is not confined to the walled boundaries of a school. Instead, it extends to numerous informal settings and in turn influences an individual’s holistic development. Our family, peer group, relatives, acquaintances, etc. are a part of this informal learning process. And there is a lasting impact of this learning on our overall personalities. Informal learning is often based on our experiences. And we pass on all that we acquire to our younger generations. Our ethics, values, morals, etc. are mostly acquired by informal learning opportunities. But, in this present age of digitalization, there are many more channels that help us with informal learning (like streaming platforms, websites, books, educational content, etc.).

In our family, there can be numerous examples of informal learning. Such as parents educating their children about table manners, or simply helping a younger one to ride/drive a vehicle. It is clear that society and its members affect our learning environment. And this process goes on and on with or without formal learning for an individual.

2- Society determines the learning pathway for advancement

It is a reality that our financial standing and identity play a vital role in our social lives. Hence, we all aim at improving our situations, and for this, we go the mile ahead and follow the trends prevalent in society. Our society influences our choices and learning preferences. And all this in turn influences our learning environment.

For instance, the market situations dominate our selection of learning pathways (like streams and disciplines). Hence, the learning environment also changes according to the needs and trends of the workforce.

According to credible sources, in India, engineering and technology domains have the highest employability rating (of 47%) in the year 2021. On the contrary, the same report shows an employability rating of only 25.02% after a polytechnic course (vocational).  This article is about how does society affect the learning environment?

3- Society influences our views about learning

The learning environment around us is also a product of our own thoughts and beliefs.

A couple of decades ago, adulthood was synonymous with getting married and having kids. But the perception of learning and education has changed considerably in the present times. Today, the younger generations are focused on career growth rather than just getting married.

<According to a survey in 2020, 69.4% of the millennials with higher education or a vocation college course preferred getting married between 26 to 30 years of age.>

The recent global pandemic is a great example to cite. It has reiterated the importance of skills, education, and learning to cope up with the crisis time. Covid-19 has also created a huge gap between the aspirations and realities of the job markets. Hence, the complexities of life have continuously grown in leaps and bounds tarnishing the peace of mind.

The post-Covid complex scenario has aggravated the hardships of general life. And especially in developing countries like India, financial independence is now more important than any other aspect of life.

<According to the Times of India, the income of 97% of our Indian households has declined since 2020. And the unemployment rate is 12.4% (15.1% in urban and 11.2% in rural areas)>

4- The societal impact of the unforeseen circumstances

Unforeseen circumstances such as pandemic lockdowns, economic uncertainty also affect the way we learn. Off late, Indian society has accepted an all-new learning environment through online schooling and digital learning.

It is clear that the Indian stakeholders have embraced virtual learning. And this paradigm shift has completely changed our learning environment for good.

<As per a detailed report by KPMG, online education in India is estimated to grow to USD 1.96 billion in the next five years. And the number of paid users will increase from 1.6 million (in 2016) to 9.6 million (in 2021), at a compound annual growth rate of 52%.>

Other than this, the impact of such incidents/happenings in society also deepens the challenges related to learning. For example- The recent Covid crisis created a huge learning loss for our Indian students who could not even access online schooling

These incidents also deprive students of the right learning environment. As prior to the pandemic, over 6 million children (both boys and girls) were already out-of-school. And later during the shutdown in 2020, 247 million students (from elementary and secondary schools) in India were impacted.

5- Cultural influences

Our socio-cultural background largely determines what and how we learn. And in this way, cultural influences affect our learning environment. The cultural knowledge that we acquire creates an impact on our thinking capabilities. Besides, our social living, traditions, customs, etc. also shape up our beliefs and moral values.

Culture plays a vital role in social change. Hence, our policymakers also focus on culturally acceptable outcomes while designing reforms/frameworks/policies.

6- Educational Reforms

Another important factor that affects our learning is the change brought within society through educational reforms. These policies/reforms change the core values of our society. And this in turn changes our learning environment.

Off late, the recent Education Policy in the year 2020 aimed at a radical reconstruction of our education system. And the reforms suggested by the policymakers shifted the entire focus of the learning environment from the ‘teacher’ to the ‘taught’ by visualizing a student-centric educational system.

Parting Thoughts:

We do not have much control over social, political, and many other aspects. However, we can still choose to stick to only the positive influences of society on the learning environment.

Our society supports learning through formal, non-formal, and informal ways. And it certainly influences our learning environment in numerous positive and negative ways!
