How does society affect the learning environment?

How does society affect the learning environment?

Education plays a key role in structuring and shaping up society. It empowers individuals to adapt to social change. And supports them to play their varied roles efficiently.

There is a strong influence of society on the educational structure. And it certainly affects the ones learning environment immensely.

Let’s explore how does society affect the learning environment?

1- Formal and informal education

Learning is not confined to the walled boundaries of a school. Instead, it extends to numerous informal settings and in turn influences an individual’s holistic development. Our family, peer group, relatives, acquaintances, etc. are a part of this informal learning process. And there is a lasting impact of this learning on our overall personalities. Informal learning is often based on our experiences. And we pass on all that we acquire to our younger generations. Our ethics, values, morals, etc. are mostly acquired by informal learning opportunities. But, in this present age of digitalization, there are many more channels that help us with informal learning (like streaming platforms, websites, books, educational content, etc.).

In our family, there can be numerous examples of informal learning. Such as parents educating their children about table manners, or simply helping a younger one to ride/drive a vehicle. It is clear that society and its members affect our learning environment. And this process goes on and on with or without formal learning for an individual.

2- Society determines the learning pathway for advancement

It is a reality that our financial standing and identity play a vital role in our social lives. Hence, we all aim at improving our situations, and for this, we go the mile ahead and follow the trends prevalent in society. Our society influences our choices and learning preferences. And all this in turn influences our learning environment.

For instance, the market situations dominate our selection of learning pathways (like streams and disciplines). Hence, the learning environment also changes according to the needs and trends of the workforce.

According to credible sources, in India, engineering and technology domains have the highest employability rating (of 47%) in the year 2021. On the contrary, the same report shows an employability rating of only 25.02% after a polytechnic course (vocational).  This article is about how does society affect the learning environment?

3- Society influences our views about learning

The learning environment around us is also a product of our own thoughts and beliefs.

A couple of decades ago, adulthood was synonymous with getting married and having kids. But the perception of learning and education has changed considerably in the present times. Today, the younger generations are focused on career growth rather than just getting married.

<According to a survey in 2020, 69.4% of the millennials with higher education or a vocation college course preferred getting married between 26 to 30 years of age.>

The recent global pandemic is a great example to cite. It has reiterated the importance of skills, education, and learning to cope up with the crisis time. Covid-19 has also created a huge gap between the aspirations and realities of the job markets. Hence, the complexities of life have continuously grown in leaps and bounds tarnishing the peace of mind.

The post-Covid complex scenario has aggravated the hardships of general life. And especially in developing countries like India, financial independence is now more important than any other aspect of life.

<According to the Times of India, the income of 97% of our Indian households has declined since 2020. And the unemployment rate is 12.4% (15.1% in urban and 11.2% in rural areas)>

4- The societal impact of the unforeseen circumstances

Unforeseen circumstances such as pandemic lockdowns, economic uncertainty also affect the way we learn. Off late, Indian society has accepted an all-new learning environment through online schooling and digital learning.

It is clear that the Indian stakeholders have embraced virtual learning. And this paradigm shift has completely changed our learning environment for good.

<As per a detailed report by KPMG, online education in India is estimated to grow to USD 1.96 billion in the next five years. And the number of paid users will increase from 1.6 million (in 2016) to 9.6 million (in 2021), at a compound annual growth rate of 52%.>

Other than this, the impact of such incidents/happenings in society also deepens the challenges related to learning. For example- The recent Covid crisis created a huge learning loss for our Indian students who could not even access online schooling

These incidents also deprive students of the right learning environment. As prior to the pandemic, over 6 million children (both boys and girls) were already out-of-school. And later during the shutdown in 2020, 247 million students (from elementary and secondary schools) in India were impacted.

5- Cultural influences

Our socio-cultural background largely determines what and how we learn. And in this way, cultural influences affect our learning environment. The cultural knowledge that we acquire creates an impact on our thinking capabilities. Besides, our social living, traditions, customs, etc. also shape up our beliefs and moral values.

Culture plays a vital role in social change. Hence, our policymakers also focus on culturally acceptable outcomes while designing reforms/frameworks/policies.

6- Educational Reforms

Another important factor that affects our learning is the change brought within society through educational reforms. These policies/reforms change the core values of our society. And this in turn changes our learning environment.

Off late, the recent Education Policy in the year 2020 aimed at a radical reconstruction of our education system. And the reforms suggested by the policymakers shifted the entire focus of the learning environment from the ‘teacher’ to the ‘taught’ by visualizing a student-centric educational system.

Parting Thoughts:

We do not have much control over social, political, and many other aspects. However, we can still choose to stick to only the positive influences of society on the learning environment.

Our society supports learning through formal, non-formal, and informal ways. And it certainly influences our learning environment in numerous positive and negative ways!

10 Awesome Tips To Improve Writing Skills For Children

10 Awesome Tips To Improve Writing Skills For Children

If you’re a parent, teaching your children how to write is an essential skill that will help them succeed in the future. This post will provide tips to improve writing skills for children of all ages.

What Is A Good Writing Skill for Children? Simply put, it’s one they can do. There are things parents and teachers can do to help children learn how to write, but the best way is for the child to start writing. You don’t have to force writing or make the process anything exciting. It should be fun and enjoyable. Tell your child to write about anything they want to; it doesn’t matter what it is. Just help them get started writing and encourage them as they go along.

Forcing a child to write when they don’t want to could have the opposite effect of making them hate writing forever. So just let them do their own thing, as long as they’re physically writing (not typing) on some paper.

The benefit of a Good Writing Skill to Children

Good writing skill has a huge benefit to children as it helps them in all subjects at school. Reading, writing, and spelling are the basic building blocks of education, so that most schools will put a lot of emphasis on these skills. The sooner kids learn these skills, the better.

Here are some examples of the benefits of a good writing skill:

Writing letters helps your child learn to spell correctly and adequately make their letters. It will help them in the future when they start learning to write paragraphs, stories, and any other written work they may have to do in school. It’s easy for anyone to know letter names when you write them out by hand and ask your child to say each letter. You can also play the game where you tell your child to find the letter, and they have to copy it down or come up with a word that starts with that letter.

Writing short stories helps in writing paragraphs and makes your child practice writing sentences. Your child must start learning about the idea of different sentences to use in their writing. You can also play the game with your child to give them a word and ask them to come up with a sentence or a story that ends with that word.

10 Creative Tips to Improve Writing Skills of Children

Are you looking for ways to improve your child’s writing skills? Are they having trouble learning how to write? This post has ten creative tips and ideas to help your child become a better writer.

Tip #1: Tell them “Just Write.”

Please don’t force them to write but let them do it on their own. Make sure they are physically writing on some paper rather than typing. You want them to learn the feeling of holding a pencil or pen and moving it across the paper, forming letters and words as they go. If they are typing their work, though, they won’t be able to use the same muscle memory and will need to focus and be careful when doing so.

Tip #2: Set up a “Catch Phrase”

As your child is writing, ask them if they are ready to share, but don’t put words in their mouth. It will help them learn to express themselves in writing. Ask open-ended questions such as “What do you think… ” and “I wonder what happened next.”

Tip #3: Encourage them to write down their ideas

They must learn to write down all their ideas as they come up and don’t forget them. Let them know that you want to hear about their ideas and plans, not just what they have written down. Your child needs to learn how to write out goals, create a storyboard or outlines so they can use these later at school when doing projects.

Tip #4: Look for Errors

Looking for the errors in your child’s writing will improve their skills. It’s easy to fix a simple misspelled word or mistake in a sentence but harder to fix the errors in letters and paragraphs. One major thing you want to watch out for is if they accidentally write their name backward or use different capitalization in their writing. It may take time, but it will help them learn how to use correct grammar, spelling, and punctuation more efficiently.

Tip #5: Read and Discuss

They must practice reading their work to see how it sounds when spoken out loud. It may feel a bit silly, but it will help them learn how to read their writing aloud and clearly. It’s also essential that they discuss their work with you. Please encourage them to ask questions, explain what they don’t understand, or create new ideas for stories based on what you share. It will help them learn to think and collaborate more.

Tip #6: Create Compelling Stories

Please encourage your child to create stories based on anything they want to. They may have seen a movie, read a fairy tale, even heard a song, and want to use those ideas in a series of books or short stories. These are great examples of the type of things that could work well for children’s writing.

Tip #7: Look for Great Read-Alouds

Many excellent books will inspire children to read, write and learn. These books should include exciting characters, stories that can be used as examples for children, and beautiful illustrations. It will show your child what they need to do to create a compelling account.

Tip #8: Write an Article

Have your child write a news article focusing on something they have experienced or want to talk about. It will help them learn to create news articles using interesting language, facts, and even personal feelings. It is a good way for your child to practice writing stories and use good grammar and spelling.

Tip #9: Create a Storyboard

Help them develop characters, setting, plot and create a storyboard for their story. They need to understand how all these parts come together to create a fantastic piece of writing. Also, they must know that they can change any part of the story along the way if needed.

Tip #10: Encourage Their Interest

Identify what your child is interested in and find ways to work with them on their writing. If they are fascinated by dinosaurs, then help them create a series of books based on the topic. Once they have developed their ideas, ask them to share them with you. Children need to have a creative outlet, which could be just the thing to help them get started.

Please help your child develop as a writer by providing them with the tools to become a great author, whether they like to write fiction or nonfiction. Have them behave in the same way when they illustrate their work as when they are writing and reading. These tips will help your child quickly learn how to write better and more creatively.

7 Important Roles of A School Principal

7 Important roles of a school principal

A Principal’s role may vary depending upon the team size/structure of a school. Some startups may not have CFOs, CMOs or CIOs and other similar roles. In such cases a Principal is required to step into additional domains and play his/her role. In principle, a principal has to ensure sold grip in the following areas:

1-      Collaboration with Parents, Teachers and Students to identify areas of improvement

  • Surveys – Many free survey services such as SurveyMonkey, Research.net are available. If the school website is based on WordPress, then several free and paid plugins are available. Please check our polls and opinion section.
  • Parents teacher meeting – While most of the PTMs are attended by the teachers, yet principal should ensure his/her presence in some of the meetings to hear directly from parents. This will not only give him direct feedback about school policies, teaching quality and general management but also give parents a sense of confidence that their feedback was received by the principal directly. This approach will improve school’s respect in society.
  • “Reach the Principal” mechanism on website and social forums – A dedicated button on the website may be added that should be linked to a form where user can fill in the information, provide feedback, ask a specific question to the principal. Remember, a disclaimer or a guidance need to be provided on this page so that people should only contact the principal if their concern is related to the principal itself. Else they should fill out another form to contact Administration Department. This will ensure principal does not get bombarded by irrelevant messages.
  • Open door policy for Students and teachers – Once in a while, Principal should offer open-door policy for the students to get the opinions from students.
  • Anonymous Feedback Mechanism – An anonymous feedback mechanism should also be promoted so that students can provide honest feedback without being worried of getting identified.

2-      Stay abreast of new techniques and Educational Trends

  • Membership of forums – There are many focus groups where new ideas, recommendations or brainstorming of different educational philosophies are discussed. It will be a great initiative from the principal to encourage the staff in respective domains to spend 30-60 minutes each week on such forums, pick some of the important points (which may add value to their institute) and discuss in monthly school meetings.
  • Focus Groups – Focus Groups should only limited to the education aspects, instead it may consider new/different teaching techniques, new technologies’ reviews, better accounts and finance management, improved governance and so on.

3-      Maintaining Financial Targets

  • Revenues – One of the prime goals of a school is to ensure that revenues are maintained and improved. Definitely it is linked with ensuring more admissions in the school, providing additional after-school services to students, providing parenting sessions, additional computer courses and skills, providing transport services for students. The principal need to work with Marketing and Product teams to work on new and better mechanisms for improving the revenues of the school. Also, monthly revenue reports must be reviewed with respective teams. Principal should also introduce rewards for the staff who come up with new ideas for producing more revenues.
  • Expense Control – A principle should have a close eye on the expenses. Since running a school involves a large number of procurement activities and several aspects of operational expenses, hence it is imperative for principal to have a deep dive on the expenses (Fixed as well as running expenses). A strong audit mechanism and procurement process must be in place to avoid mistakes and frauds. Read this article on how to reduce business expenses
  • Important: In the name of increasing revenues and decreasing expenses, a principal must ensure that quality of education, staff, infrastructure is not compromised or else it will be short term gain but long term pain.

4-      Facilities, Maintenance and Support Services

  • While the main focus of school is to ensure top quality study, yet infrastructure related services such as (Play areas, classrooms, halls, shops, uniform and book stores cannot be avoided.
  • Our blog “55 signs of a great school” is a good starting point to identify the week areas and to divert the focus for improvement.
  • Fixed Assets & Write off planning – Quarter and annual reports must be reviewed by principal to see what assets require write off. A visionary process should be in place to recover as much money as possible. The assets can be re-used, re-furbished and/or re-sold to similar niche of businesses

5-      Curriculum Adherence and Enhancements

  • Compliance – Local bodies compliance as well as continuous enhancement as per international standards is one of the key priorities of a principal.
  • Quality – Quality of courses’ contents should be assured through benchmarking mechanism.
  • Developing and implementing School Programs [Educational as well as extracurricular activities)
  • Once in a while, the principal should demand “market analysis report” from his team. Such reports should be based on comparison against the rest of the schools in the vicinity and global educational institute. A visionary principal believes in continuous improvement which can be attained through persistent audits.

6-      Enforcement of Rules and Regulations

  • Attendance system [For staff as well as for students]  – There are many thumb scanning or card based access systems available that may be used to deploy an accurate attendance system.
  • Parents and Student portal – School Management Websites / Portals are available that can help on this subject.

24 Critical Problems of Online Classes (and 6 advantages)

24 Critical Problems of Online Classes (and 6 advantages)

Corona has disturbed the education ecosystem as a result of which several problems of online classes have emerged. Schools have adopted online methods of teaching however there are numerous critical problems associated with this approach. It is important that institutions, in collaboration with parents and respective stakeholders, work tirelessly to come up with strategies and action plans to resolve (or reduce the impact of ) these challenges. Below is a list of 24 problems of online classes

24 Disadvantages of Online Classes (E-Learning)

  1. Teachers cannot see what students are doing which directly impacts the quality of education as teachers cannot supervise the students properly.
  2. During normal school hours kids do a lot of physical movement in breaks whereas during online classes no major physical activity happens which leads to kids’ health issues.
  3. Kids learn a lot from each other when they socialize in school. Socializing results in exchange of information and ideas, establishes mutual trust and emotional bonding with each other and improves several personality traits. Online classes directly impact the grooming of kids.
  4. Due to continuous sitting in front of the screen, kids’ eyesight gets impacted or may lead to back issues due to extended sitting in the same posture.
  5. Families with more than one kid have to purchase additional tabs or computers which is a major cost for many middle-class parents.
  6. Many parents and kids have to face IT and network related problems. Families that do not have much exposure to technology suffer a lot due to this.
  7. Teachers cannot judge the level of comprehension of students and sometimes unable to provide ‘additional’ explanations to students. Usually, in regular classroom teaching, teachers can easily judge if the students are not grasping the concepts and he/she can exert extra efforts to let kids fathom the concepts.online classes
  8. Many schools do not have a mechanism to check online homework. Teachers cannot check students’ textbooks, copy books and work books . Many students take ‘advantage’ of this and do not complete home assignments.
  9. Students may not follow instructions and rules and do not comply, knowing that school can’t do anything.
  10. Students and parents are not comfortable with the new ways of class tests and have to put extra effort into learning new mechanisms.
  11. Some students can easily deceive the exam system and take help from their siblings to pass the exam.
  12. Students can easily skip classes. Even if the teacher takes the attendance at start, it is quite easy for student to miss it for the rest of the class tenure
  13. Due to no interaction with class fellowes, students get bored which leads to distraction from study
  14. Students can play online games or watch videos while being ‘present’ in online class.
  15. Students may get distracted due to mic issues, speakers issues or other computer issues [such as patch upgrades, software restart etc]
  16. Students may take extended breaks for water or for washroom which may result in missing important parts of lessons.
  17. Since the students do not have to wake up early and get ready for school, they tend to sleep late which makes them dizzy during the class. Some students may fall asleep during the class. Sleeping late also impacts their health.
  18. Many students cannot practice what the teacher has taught. This lowers their graph of learning.
  19. Students do not get personal attention from the teacher in general and for specific problems.
  20. Some teachers do not produce qualitative presentations for kids to elaborate the contents.
  21. Students keep calling their parents for many small matters which creates stress for the parents.
  22. If one sibling makes noise, others can no longer pay attention to their classes. Small/medium size homes do not have adequate numbers of rooms to manage this.
  23. Some schools are charging extra fees for the online softwares, apps development and other IT services which is an additional burden on parents.
  24. To provide comfortable learning environments, students need a dedicated study table and overall setup. Families with 2 or more kids cannot purchase and manage extra furniture due to space and money constraints.

24 Critical Problems of Online Classes (and 6 advantages) 77

6 Advantages of Online Classes (E-Learning)

  1. Parents do not have to worry about making their kids ready for school early morning. They don’t need to make sure if the uniform is pressed, the kids’ school bag is ready and their lunch box is packed.
  2. Parents can monitor how their child is studying in the class. How much does he/she participate in the class. Parents can also get a feeling on how other students are responding in the class. This gives them an idea on how much extra efforts are needed for their kids to cover the gap, if any.
  3. Parents save money for not purchasing uniforms, for not paying school bus fees, for not filling the petrol / gasoline and not giving pocket money for the lunch.
  4. Parents do not have to worry about what kids eat from school canteen as they can serve homemade food to their loved ones.
  5. Students are free during the breaks in which they can spend time with parents or can do anything they like.
  6. While staying home, kids don’t get bullied which is a sigh of relief for some of the parents.

Teachers’ Toolkit for Handling Sibling Bullying

Teachers’ Toolkit for Handling Sibling Bullying

Teachers’ Toolkit for Handling Sibling Bullying

When I saw that agreeable, friendly child helping his younger brother to pack his backpack, I couldn’t believe that he was a bully to the same brother. But that was what his teacher has told me earlier that morning.

She reported an incident of abuse in which elder child pushed his brother from a swing causing him to break his nose and that that incident was not a standalone event in the history of these boys.

How a young child of kindergarten could purposefully harm his brother and that so repeatedly? That question kept the staff bewildered.

Interestingly, dealing with such children and families starts with answering this same question. Teachers and onlookers need to understand that judging these family dynamics is not going to help these families in any way. In contrast, we need to understand that these events and behaviors are more impulsive than planned.

Step 1: Feel Empathy

And, no, here I am not talking about feeling empathy with the victim only. Bully also need as much empathy and acceptance from teachers as victims do.

The process of intervention in any kind of bullying can only start with acceptance. You have to accept the bully as a child. (There is a difference between accepting the behavior and accepting the person showing the behavior. And this difference is the start of empathy.)

This acceptance, which in turn is pre-requisite for empathy towards a bullying child, comes from understanding the pressure that child was going through. Teachers need to acknowledge that every child has an inert understanding about which behaviors hurt or which ones help. On top of this understanding, children are hardwired to choose good behaviors unless they feel internal or external pressures to choose otherwise.

In most cases of sibling bullying, child feel this pressure because their parents haven’t taught them to navigate through the feelings of jealousy that arise when their siblings join the family. Labeling them as bullies or aggressors only adds to this burden.

When a teacher understands this pressure, they have reason to help the bully not just the victim of bullying.

Step 2: Communicate

Most cases of sibling bullying co-exist with complex family dynamics. In such cases, the teacher should communicate the matter with the school psychologist.

In milder cases, they should communicate with the family, and other teachers of bullies and victims, about this matter to create awareness, clear misunderstandings, and create a common gam plan.

Appreciate the human they, victims and bullies alike, are. Be a little more positive towards the duo. If they want to talk about their emotions, lend a listening ear. Create class activities which talk about family dynamics and bonding with family members.

Educate the whole class about bullying and what they can do to stop sibling bullying.

Step 3: Develop Social Skills

Inclusion and tolerance are a few mindsets that help in eradicating any type of bullying. But if a child has to fight with himself (as is the case with a bully), the emotional intelligence is more crucial than these social mindsets.

Include class activities which focus on building socio-emotional intelligence among students. A few common examples include naming emotions of others and themselves, journaling, and building emotions using positive words or actions.

Wrap Up

Sibling bullying starts at home and its elimination can only happen at hope. That said, teachers and school environment plays an vital role in mitigating the losses and creating awareness around this topic.

If you are witnessing such bullying among your students, step up to bring normalcy within the lives of those affected.
